Now I need your help. The wordpress site im working on has registration open to anyone who wants to sign up on the site.
It creates a spam problem from autobots, because there is not captcha activated.
So I've tried installing a few captcha plugins in the hope that I would see it appear as an extra option in the "register" popup window but it does not.

Can you help me, pointing me to a plugin that works or a setting in the theme that will help me to solve my problem with spam registration?

I just checked reCaptcha. For example, the first found reCaptcha plugin is work ok for me for login and registration forms:
You need to setup this plugin and add api keys in settings. Read more in the plugin description.

Of course that was the only plugin that I have not installed by now. Thanks again, it's working:-)
